• Window Treatment: A general term for anything used to cover or enhance a window for privacy, light control, insulation, or decoration (e.g., curtains, blinds, shades, shutters).
• Curtain Rod: The horizontal rod or pole from which curtains or drapes are hung. Professional installation ensures it is level, securely anchored, and properly sized for the window.
• Bracket: A metal or plastic support piece that attaches the curtain rod, blind headrail, or shade mechanism to the wall or window frame.
• Finial: The decorative piece on the end of a curtain rod.
• Headrail (or Headpiece): The top component of a blind or shade mechanism that houses the operating cords, rollers, or lift system.
• Valance: A short length of decorative fabric, wood, or other material mounted across the top of a window to conceal the headrail or curtain rod hardware.
• Mounting Depth: The minimum distance required from the window glass to the wall for a treatment (like a blind or shutter) to fit correctly within the window frame (Inside Mount).
• Inside Mount: A window treatment installed within the window casing/frame. This provides a clean, built-in look.
• Outside Mount: A window treatment installed outside the window casing/frame, often covering the trim. This is typically used to make a window look larger or when the inside casing is too shallow.
• Blind: A type of window covering made of hard, horizontal or vertical slats (like Venetian or vertical blinds) that can be tilted to control light.
• Shade: A type of soft window covering made of a single or continuous piece of fabric or material (like roller, Roman, or cellular shades) that is raised or lowered to cover the window.
• Drapery (or Drapes): Heavy, pleated fabric window coverings, often lined, that are typically floor-length and operated on a traverse rod or rings.
